New Survey Shows Growing Focus on Technology, Process Improvement and Cyber Security

Sandpiper Partners and Williams Lea Tag’s fifth annual survey spotlights how law firms see technology and process improvements impacting service levels, data security and cost reduction.

NEW YORK--()--Williams Lea Tag, the global leader in marketing and communications supply chain services, and Sandpiper Partners, LLC, a recognized education and business consultancy for the legal industry, today announced publication of the results of the Fifth Annual Survey on Trends and Opportunities in Law Firm Outsourcing. The survey offers insight into law firm initiatives in 2016 and those that are being implemented through 2017. Survey participants are leaders at mid and large size firms with more than 70% of respondents in C-level director or managing partner roles at their firm.

With five years’ worth of survey data in hand, clear trends have emerged; many revolving around technology investments. Use of technology as a strategy and for cost savings has skyrocketed over the last five years from 41% to 64% and 25% to 67% respectively.

“More centralization, targeted technology spending and greater interest in outsourcing additional functions like document processing and marketing are all trends we noted in the most recent survey which was conducted in January 2017,” noted Lynn S. Glasser, President of Sandpiper Partners.

Additional areas explored in this year’s survey include firm-wide document and digitization strategies and marketing and business development support functions. Digitization is moving ahead rapidly, with over 80% of those surveyed stating they currently have, or plan to have, an initiative to reduce reliance on paper.

“Client demands appear to be the main driver of technology focus. Pressures to reduce cost, while improving service levels and safeguarding data security are impacting firm budgets,” said Don Plummer, Managing Director of Client Services, Williams Lea Tag. 84% of respondents reporting they are making technology investments in response to client pressures around cyber security and 64% reporting that technology investments are impacted by client demands for digital workflows. Don added: “We continue to see our Law Firm clients increase their focus on specific process improvements and technologies that help them serve their clients more effectively.”
