UnitedLex Hosting Workshop on Maximizing Legal Department Potential at the 2017 ACC Legal Operations Conference

‘Beyond Cost Containment: Realizing the Legal Department’s Full Potential’ will educate participants on how to transform their organization’s legal department into a strategic business asset

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--()--UnitedLex, a global, full-service provider of technology-powered business, legal and cybersecurity services, today announced it will be hosting a workshop at the upcoming 2017 ACC Legal Operations Conference (June 4 – 6; Rosemont Hilton, Chicago). The advanced workshop, titled ‘Beyond Cost Containment: Realizing the Legal Department’s Full Potential’ (June 5, 11:00am – 12:30pm), will demonstrate how legal departments can become more of a strategic asset by focusing on and prioritizing high-value work that has the largest business impact, and outsourcing cost-intensive, process-driven tasks.

“Managing legal cost has become a core expectation for legal departments, and while important, it is not a true measure of the strategic value that law departments could - and should - contribute to their organizations,” said Nancy Jessen, Senior Vice President - Law Department Consulting at UnitedLex. “This workshop will focus on how legal departments can transform and elevate themselves to better enable successful accomplishment of their company’s goals and objectives, while still cutting costs and creating a more challenging and fulfilling work environment for employees.”

The workshop will explore multiple models that legal departments can employ, ranging from simple modifications to transformation of internal and external staffing ratios and operating models, including the use of multi-faceted professional service organizations and alternative business structure law firms. We explore balancing considerations such as the need for internal talent development, process efficiency and effective use of technology. In small-group, table-top exercises, participants will work together to:

  • Create a meaningful and multi-purpose matter taxonomy
  • Rank each type of legal work against how it provides business impact
  • Document current workload allocation with or without detailed time tracking
  • Validate the legal department's current state and perspective on priorities with business leadership
  • Form a new mindset and culture around resource hiring, retention and rewards

In addition to the workshop, Nancy Jessen and other UnitedLex executives will be holding “office hours” at the conference (June 5; 2:30-3:30pm; Crescents Room). There, they will meet with conference attendees to discuss their specific situations and receive guidance on how to best support their business beyond cost containment in the areas such as internal resources, external legal spend, eDiscovery, and contract management. Joining Ms. Jessen will be Heather Jacobson, Director and Nikki Rahimzadeh, Manager - Law Department Consulting.
