United States Market Report for Facet Fixation 2017 - Research and Markets

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "US Market Report for Facet Fixation 2017 - MedCore" report to their offering.

Percutaneous minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is the least invasive of all MIS procedures. These procedures are performed using small needle-like, tubular instrumentation. The tubes act as a pathway for the insertion of screws or rods. All percutaneous systems use cannulated screws, which have a central cavity by which they are fed along a guidewire in the tube, allowing accurate implantation without directly viewing the surgical site. Facet fixation is one type of percutaneous minimally invasive surgery in which the facet joints in the thoracolumbar region are fused using facet screws, bolts or allograft dowels.

Facet screw fixation offers the advantage of placing a single screw across each articulating facet joint to immobilize a motion segment, thereby reducing the amount of hardware (and therefore exposure) necessary for fusion. As representative of another emerging technology in the minimally invasive field, the facet fixation market will experience growth trends similar to the spinous process fixation market. The market has experienced high initial growth over the last five years, which has been attributed to increasing awareness of the procedure, as well the entrance of new competitors, and new products, into the market.

Growth in this market is driven by the advantages that minimally invasive facet fixation surgeries have over traditional (open) pedicle screw procedures. These benefits include decreased blood loss, fewer disruptions to neighboring tissues and structures, and reduced recovery and intraoperative times. Overall, facet fixation technologies are cannibalizing cases that previously would have been treated with pedicle screws, such as grade I and II spondylolisthesis.
