Many urban Internet consumers are not aware of the nuances of most life insurance products - be it Endowment Plans, Term Plans, Annuities or Unit-Linked Insurance Plans (ULIPs), among others. For example, only three out of ten urban internet consumers really know what an annuity plan is. Barely half of the urban netizens knew what a term plan is.

The awareness about the four insurance products mentioned above dips further among urban netizens in the northern parts of the country. The younger urban net-savvy ones score really low on awareness. Urban India believes that their insurance cover should be almost double of their present coverage. That means, the coverage amount should be around Rs. 3.5 million from Rs. 1.9 million presently and similarly for health insurance, coverage amount should be Rs. 1.1 million from Rs. 0.6 million.

These findings present a serious challenge as well as a unique opportunity to the insurance industry that has clocked 20 percent annual growth in 2016.
