LOS ANGELES--()--To kick off the national tour of the multi-award winning, one-woman play Tammi Mac’s “Bag Lady”, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) will sponsor the sold-out Los Angeles kick-off dates on May 6-7th at the Los Angeles Southwest College. The play will be performed at the Little Theatre on campus. “Bag Lady” is a personal journey of local KJLH radio personality Tammi Mac, who wrote a one-woman play about her life and has performed the play over the past 3 years, to sold-out audiences, in Los Angeles. The play has won numerous NAACP Image Awards and is a nine-time winner at LAWEBFEST, the influential web series festival.

“Bag Lady” deals with multiple issues including childhood sexual abuse, substance abuse, intimate partner violence and black male/female relationships. At the conclusion of the play, there is an open dialogue between health professional experts, Tammi Mac and a woman living with HIV/AIDS. This dialogue focuses on healing and redemption and encouraging women who have experienced negative life experiences to go on with their lives.

This weekend’s performances are the official launch of the AHF-sponsored national tour of the play, with dates to open in Cleveland, OH on Friday, May 19th; the historic Karamu House Theatre in Houston, TX in September; and a culminating performance in Atlanta, GA during a national public health conference on the impact of various sexual health issues on women of color.

“We are so excited to take this powerful production on the road as part of the ongoing work that AHF is doing through our Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition (BLACC) to educate, inspire and empower people of color, especially women and girls,” said Cynthia Davis, chairwoman of AHF’s Board of Directors. “The show has had a profound impact in Los Angeles, and we know that the relevance of the messages shared will resonate in other communities across this country.”

The “Bag Lady” tour continues AHF’s work in using art and culture to create broader awareness of the impact of public health issues, such as HIV/AIDS and other STD/STIs on communities across the nation.
