IDG Research Finds Disconnect Between Threat Perception and Preparedness

Bluelock-commissioned survey indicates loss of customer confidence as biggest concern (64%) around security breaches

INDIANAPOLIS--()--Bluelock, provider of Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) for complex environments and sensitive data, today releases findings from a recent survey in partnership with CSO, A Two-Pronged Approach to Locking Down IT Security. This market research explores the importance of implementing both preventative and reactive measures when securing organizations’ IT systems.

According to the study conducted by CSO through IDG Research, executive leadership and IT professionals’ biggest concerns around data breaches are loss of customer confidence (64 percent) and loss of sensitive data (49 percent).

Of the respondents, 59 percent said they focus on preventative measures to minimize data breaches, but reactive measures are becoming increasingly important in security strategies. The majority (51 percent) of respondents were most concerned with ransomware attacks and security incidents caused by human error. 44 percent of VPs care most about time-to-recovery after a security incident, second only to their concern for reputational impact. Because of this, 64 percent of survey respondents believe disaster recovery should be included in IT security strategies.

“Cybercriminals are making a living off targeting industries which are reliant upon information that needs to be readily available and strictly confidential. Preventative measures are key to securing your organization’s IT systems, but not the whole picture as they cannot be foolproof to all threats at all times,” said Derek Brost, Director of Engineering at Bluelock. “Organizations must address restorative and results-oriented security solutions as well. More than 50 respondents with varying levels of IT leadership positions at manager level or above responded to the survey evaluating perceived security threats, data protection priorities and the perceived importance of including reactive/restorative data protection strategies in addition to proactive measure as a comprehensive approach to minimizing security risk. Responses came from an array of industries, including banking and financial services, technology, manufacturing, and healthcare.
