OpenDrives Demonstrates 8K Post-Production Workflow at NAB Show

Pushing the limits of data storage and proving the feasibility of uncompressed 8K content creation in the enterprise

LAS VEGAS--()--OpenDrives today announced that it is demonstrating uncompressed 8K video playback and online editing from its all-flash, network-attached Avalanche storage system at NAB Show’s StudioXperience booth #SL2424. This unprecedented demonstration will simultaneously achieve 1 stream of 8K UHD 10-bit DPX playback, 1 stream of 4K UHD 16-bit EXR color correction and 2 streams of 8K RAW online editorial. Chad Knowles, CEO of OpenDrives said, “OpenDrives continues to innovate to bring the fastest, most reliable data storage systems in the industry to market. By constantly pushing the envelope of what’s possible in terms of performance and low latency, our team helps customers to achieve greater efficiencies while improving their workflows.”

With higher resolutions, high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate (HFR) and a wider color palette the new normal for film and television production, data storage and bandwidth requirements are exploding. The demand for higher resolution content is forcing media companies to look at faster storage solutions that are also cost-effective.

While traditional, general-purpose data storage manufacturers demonstrate 4K video content at NAB Show, OpenDrives demonstrates 8K; a technological feat that requires four times more throughput to achieve. OpenDrives’ all-flash Avalanche system is capable of producing up to 18GB/s of aggregate throughput, an impressive benchmark compared to competing systems. OpenDrives is the first to admit that expensive all-flash drive technology is not always the best solution for higher resolution, large capacity workflows. “Our hybrid SSD-HDD product, Spectre, can achieve 9GB/s of throughput and multiple streams of uncompressed 4K and even 6K,” said Sean Lee, CTO of OpenDrives.

For studios not yet mastering 4K content, the extreme performance of OpenDrives enables many more concurrent streams of content in any resolution, from HD to 2K and every codec in between. In enterprise-scale, collaborative video production environments, the speed and efficiency of OpenDrives allows large creative teams to create more iterations, deliver projects faster, optimize application performance and significantly reduce infrastructure and labor costs.

Although 4K is the current trend, 8K is on the horizon. Content companies that invest in cutting-edge technologies such as OpenDrives will gain a long-term competitive advantage by future-proofing their storage infrastructure to master the workflows of today and tomorrow.
