UK & Ireland Cinema Industry Research Report 2017 - Research and Markets

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Cinema Industry Research - UK & Ireland" report to their offering.

More than 30 years on from the opening of the UK's first multiplex, the market seems to have reached its final destination at around 170 million tickets sold each year. Further growth is constrained by a combination of film industry economics and demography. An aging population means the market for the type of youth orientated picture Hollywood is increasingly focusing on is shrinking - at the same time as the market for those pictures is growing rapidly in the numerically more important Asian market.

Britain's film industry doesn't seem able to turn out enough of the story-driven pictures favoured by an expanding older audience. Periodic cost inflation as runaway Hollywood productions are sucked in by a low exchange rate and a constant siphoning of talent to the USA don't help. Even big trends can change, however, so it may be that, after a few more years, the market's current pause will turn out to be no more than a temporary stop.

In the meantime, the UK's three biggest exhibitors are leading the charge to consolidate the European exhibition industry. Whether this is just a reflection of the increasing financialisation of large parts of the world economy, or whether there is a substantive strategy behind it remains to be seen. Odeon's new owner, Dalian Wanda, has rapidly become far and away the world's biggest exhibitor with big interests across China, the United States, Australia and Europe. Until recently the advantages of international scale have been muted but it is possible a step change may emerge.

Also covered, the Irish market suffered more from the fall-out from the financial crisis and recovery has taken longer, but a rising admissions in the last two years hopefully signal a recovery back towards pre-crisis levels of ticket sales.

This new report covers the UK film industry, film distribution, trends in cinemas, ancillary revenues from refreshment sales and on-screen advertising, as well as offering detailed financial data regarding the leading cinema chains and five year forecasts of screen numbers, admissions and box office.
