Clickdrive Using CrateDB for IoT-Enabled Vehicle Tracking and Predictive Maintenance

SQL database used to store and analyze up to 2,000 data points per second, per car

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Crate.io, developers of CrateDB, a leading open source SQL database for real time analytics of IoT and machine data, today announced that Clickdrive, an internet-enabled onboard vehicle monitoring solution, has selected CrateDB to enable storage and analysis of up to 2,000 data points per second, per car. The system helps fleet owners decrease operating costs, prevent vehicle breakdowns, and improve fleet utilization and safety.

“Most of the cars in our customers’ fleets are in use almost 24 hours a day, and we need to store and analyze the massive amounts of data they generate in real time,” said Mark Sutheran, founder, Clickdrive. “We tried a few different SQL and NoSQL databases, and CrateDB offered the best combination of high performance, scalability, and ease-of-use.”

Clickdrive provides advanced fleet management solutions to enterprises in industries ranging from car sharing to insurance. Leveraging a unique combination of precision telematics and predictive maintenance capabilities, Clickdrive can predict breakdowns before they happen, helping customers improve the safety, efficiency, and economy of their commercial fleets.

“CrateDB’s ability to query enormous amounts of data expands the realm of what’s possible with Clickdrive,” added Sutheran. “As an example, we can use the vehicle and environmental data stored in CrateDB to quickly build a complete 3D reconstruction of an accident -- showing everything from road conditions, to driver orientation, point of impact, and speed.”

CrateDB is an open source SQL database that enables real-time analytics for IoT and machine data applications. CrateDB makes machine data applications that were previously only possible using NoSQL solutions available to mainstream SQL developers. Its unique capabilities are enabled by the following innovations:

  • Distributed SQL query engine for faster JOINs, aggregations, and ad-hoc queries
  • SQL with integrated search for data and query versatility
  • Support for real time and predictive analytics on geospatial, time series, full-text, JSON, and other structured and unstructured data
  • Container architecture and automatic data sharding for simple scaling

“The amount of data that Clickdrive generates and the immediacy of the analysis they are performing is just incredible, and it’s growing rapidly as they continue to expand,” said Christian Lutz, CEO of Crate.io. “This is exactly the type of application we had in mind when we began developing CrateDB and is the key driver for ongoing development of our machine data platform.”
