Pitzer College Appoints Nigel Boyle as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty

CLAREMONT, Calif.--()--Pitzer College President Melvin L. Oliver and the Faculty Executive Committee Chair Alicia Bonaparte announced the appointment of Nigel Boyle as the College’s new vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty effective March 1, 2017 to June 30, 2019.

Boyle has taught at Pitzer since 1992. A comparative political scientist, his scholarly research focuses on the political determinants of social inequality, most recently regarding welfare-to-work policy. He held the Peter and Gloria Gold Chair in Political Studies at Pitzer from 2007 to 2012, and, in 2012, he was selected in a national search to be founding director of Pitzer’s Institute of Global/Local Action and Study (IGLAS), a position that includes an endowed chair and serves as associate dean of faculty for Global and Local Programs. Under his leadership, IGLAS developed the Global Local Mentorship Project, the Junior Faculty Development Seminar, the Pitzer Prison Education Initiative, a set of foreign language initiatives and short-term study abroad programs that focused on community engagement. He also played a leadership role in the development and implementation of Pitzer’s new four-course Social Justice and Intercultural Understanding requirement for students.

As a teacher and mentor at Pitzer, Boyle has been active in working with students applying for prestigious fellowships. In 2015, the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board named him the top Fulbright adviser. He is also the president of Aston Villa Football Club, Upper Prison, Luzira, Uganda.

Nigel Boyle most recently served as Pitzer’s interim vice president of academic affairs and interim dean of the faculty. In that role, Boyle established a reputation as a strong consensus builder and an effective advocate for faculty, staff and Pitzer’s W. M. Keck Science Department.
