Europe Market for Stereotactic Devices 2017: Unit Sales, ASPs, Market Value & Growth Trends - Research and Markets

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Europe Market for Stereotactic Devices 2017 - MedCore" report to their offering.

The market has been increasingly transitioning to the use of frameless stereotactic systems which can be used for pre-surgical planning as well as guidance through most cranial procedures. These devices incorporate superior technology and updated features.

Stereotaxy allows neurosurgeons to localize targets within patient's brains using methodology that incorporates coordinate systems with diagnostic image information. It was first conducted in 1908 by two British scientists, Sir Victor Horsley and Robert H. Clarke who placed frames on small animals based on external anatomical landmarks to navigate to specific points in their brains. This technology was not yet precise enough to be used in human subjects.

Stereotaxy has become the standard of care in neurosurgery and is now used in the majority of cranial cases. This has led to market saturation; however, there will still be some growth in unit sales as facilities that did not want to share multi-application platforms between hospital departments purchase additional units.

However, frame-based systems remain the golden standard in terms of accuracy and are more commonly used for small targets and procedures like the implantation of deep brain stimulators. This benefit will allow them to maintain their share of the market until frameless technology reaches the same level of accuracy.
