Cotton Demand in Turkey is Set to Reach Ten-year High

As Turkey’s export-oriented textile and apparel industry is starting to thrive, Turkey’s cotton demand is also soaring, and is expected to reach 6.89 million bales in 2017, marking the highest cotton demand in the last ten years. Currently, Turkey is still the world’s second largest consumer of cotton, with an approximate 350,000 tons of cotton fibre consumed in Turkey every year.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s domestic cotton production is also forecast to surge by 21 % year on year in 2017, hitting 3.21 million bales. This is also the highest cotton production in Turkey since 2006-07, mainly driven by the increasing cotton planting area, higher local cotton prices and more local farmers switching from planting low return crops such as corn to cotton.

Turkey’s Apparel Industry Sets Ambitious Export Goal

An industrial rebound has been predicted in Turkey’s cotton production and the apparel exports in near future. The Turkish textile and apparel industry has set up an ambitious goal of reaching USD 72 billion in exports by 2023, despite the latest apparel exports downturn caused by political tension with Russia and Syrian refugee crisis.

Overall, the predicted growth of Turkey’s apparel exports is also backed by the increasing exports to EU and other markets, depreciation of the Turkish lira, more foreign investment as well as government support.

Turkey’s Technical Textile and Nonwoven Sector is on the Rise

As one of the fastest growing segments, the technical textile and nonwoven sector has become a rising star in Turkey’s renowned textile and apparel industry. According to statistics from Turkey’s Ministry of Economy, the production capacity in Turkey for technical textiles and nonwovens is over 285,000 metric tons per year.

Today, Turkey is one of the leading producers for advanced and sophisticated technical textile products in many international markets, driven by the country’s developed infrastructures, growing investment in technology and innovation, increasing numbers of skilled textile workers and stronger government support.
