HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J.--()--The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress® (F4CP), the leading voice of the chiropractic profession, today releases Chiropractic: A Key to America’s Opioid Exit Strategy,” a follow-up to Chiropractic: A Safer Strategy Than Opioids,” which further documents the value of non-pharmacologic care as the first-line option to safely and effectively address acute, subacute and chronic neck, low back and neuro-musculoskeletal pain.

The paper issues several calls to action: health care payers to provide patients with physician referrals to doctors of chiropractic (DCs) rather than prescribing opioids; benefit coverage and reimbursement for chiropractic care by government and commercial payers and reimbursement to DCs as participating providers; increased access to chiropractic care for active military and veteran populations, with chiropractic care expanded in the Department of Defense and veterans’ health care systems.

“The misuse and abuse of prescription opioids is robbing the lives of 91 Americans a day, and is now classified as a major public health concern in the U.S.,” shares Sherry McAllister, DC, executive vice president, F4CP®. “This discussion documents chiropractic care as a critical component of “America’s Opioid Exit Strategy”:

  • Perform first-line assessment and care for acute, subacute and chronic low back, neck and neuro-musculoskeletal pain to avoid opiate prescribing from the first onset of pain
  • Provide care throughout treatment to mitigate the introduction of drugs
  • Offer a clinically and cost-effective approach that helps addicts achieve a wellness focused, pain-free lifestyle as they reduce their utilization of opioids

The number of opioids prescribed each year continues to spiral out of control, with 112 million opioid prescriptions in 1992 to nearly 249 million in 2015. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the opioid market now places a $78.5 billion economic drain on the U.S. each year, accounting for direct health care costs, lost productivity and charges to the criminal justice system. This epidemic underscores the need for non-pharmacological options, including chiropractic, to be a part of the resolution.

As primary care professionals for spinal health and well-being, doctors of chiropractic – who receive a minimum of seven years of higher education – are specifically trained to diagnose, evaluate and provide non-pharmaceutical care and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from acute, subacute and chronic back, low back and neck pain, headaches, neuro-musculoskeletal and other related conditions.
