LONDON--()--Technavio market research analysts forecast the global timing controllers (Tcons) market to generate close to USD 7.4 billion by 2021, according to their latest report.

The market study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global timing controllers market for 2017-2021. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the market, market shares for each display application, and growth opportunities and prospects in different geographic regions. It also presents the market landscape and a corresponding detailed analysis of the major vendors operating in the market.

According to Chetan Mohan, a lead analyst at Technavio for computing devices research, “The adoption of displays in e-readers, automotive applications, digital cameras, and infotainment in aviation has drastically improved the global display market. The increasing applications in the display market would help technological advances for Tcon products.”

Technavio hardware and semiconductor analysts highlight the following three market drivers that are contributing to the growth of the global timing controllers market:

  • Increasing demand for AR and VR gear
  • Increasing penetration of 4K displays
  • Increasing use of touch-responsive displays

Increasing demand for AR and VR gear

Though the AR and VR technology was developed years ago, it has gained popularity only recently. The high demand for AR and VR gear contributes greatly to the growth of the Tcons market. The AR and VR gear unit shipment will grow at a CAGR of 99.96% during the forecast period. By 2021, the unit shipments will reach 50.83 million units. The AR and VR segment includes VR headsets such as Oculus Rift and smart glasses such as Microsoft HoloLens and HMD, which are mostly used by the military aviation sector. The revenue from the AR and VR gear for the Tcons market will grow at an impressive CAGR of close to 81% during the forecast period. Though the unit consumption of Tcons is one per AR or VR device, the difference between the CAGR of unit shipment and revenue is mainly due to the declining ASP of the Tcons during the forecast period.

Increasing penetration of 4K displays

The Tcons that are required for UHD displays (4K resolution) need higher processing capabilities. This is due to the increased number of pixels in the horizontal and vertical lines of the display. Therefore, the cost of such Tcon ICs is much higher compared with the small-screen displays. This increases the opportunity for Tcon vendors to have larger profit margins due to the low specialization and low availability of such Tcons in the market. Hence, the increasing adoption of UHD will greatly increase the revenue generation of the vendors in the Tcons market.

Increasing use of touch-responsive displays

A touch panel is a monitor screen that can detect and compute input functions by the touch of a finger or stylus. The touch controller is a small microcontroller-based chip that is placed between the touch sensor and the touch panel. The chip can either be placed on the controller board or inside the system that is directly linked to the touch sensor. This translates the analog signals into digital signals, which are used as input functions on the device. Touch panels are mainly used in high-end handsets and other electronic touch gadgets like gaming consoles, tablets, notebooks, convertible laptops, and smartphones.

“The unit shipment of the Tcons market will grow significantly throughout the forecast period due to the increasing demand for touch-responsive displays,” says Chetan.
