Bosch at CONEXPO/IFPE 2017: Intelligence, safety and comfort for construction

Improve operations from the ground to the cloud

  • Cab of the future showcases potential for efficient system integration
  • What drives Bosch solutions for construction: Automated, connected, electrified
  • Connected technologies increase security and functionality

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.--()--At CONEXPO/IFPE 2017, Bosch will showcase system solutions for the future of construction equipment that enhance vehicle intelligence, safety and comfort. Through systems from its Commercial Vehicle & Off-Road unit as well as Bosch Rexroth, Bosch will highlight solutions that help the construction industry to improve operations from the ground to the cloud.

Bosch has been supporting the industry for a number of years and in 2016 the company introduced a new business unit, Commercial Vehicle & Off-Road, to specifically address the current and future needs of this field.

“The Bosch portfolio addresses a variety of needs with systems that make for a safer and more productive construction site,” said Andrew Allen, head of the Construction business for Commercial Vehicle & Off-Road business unit at Bosch. “We offer specific technology solutions for the industry and the Bosch IoT cloud provides an even deeper level of integration and flexibility for continuous improvement.”

Genius CAB debuts in the U.S. at CONEXPO/IFPE 2017

The Genius CAB concept will be shown for the first time in the U.S. at CONEXPO/IFPE. This project brings together a network of renowned suppliers including: Bosch, the Technische Universität Dresden, and VDBUM, the German association for construction, environmental, and machine technology. The project’s aim is to demonstrate to manufacturers of construction machinery, agricultural machinery, and industrial forklifts the untapped potential and benefits of system integration. The concept won an innovation award at bauma 2016 in the Design category.

Concept CAB showcases solutions for intelligence, safety and comfort

Intelligence:

  • The body computer is the central intelligence element in this electronic concept. The reduction of the number of electrical connections, relays, and fuses saves on material and makes circuits less complex. The reduction in complexity can greatly decrease system errors or faults. The body computer is highly customizable, as its programming can be customized to suit each customer’s applications. In the Genius CAB, the body computer performs central control of the sensor and actuator systems via CAN (J1939), LIN, or directly.
  • The Bosch direct wiper drive is an intelligent system that can adjust effortlessly to current weather conditions – whether it is snow, rain showers, or heavy rain. It is highly flexible in that drive unit and the range of movement can be adjusted to fit different cab sizes and configurations.

Safety:

  • The Bosch side-view mirror replacement displays give drivers a digital look over their shoulders. By integrating displays into the vehicle interior, the side-view mirrors can be eliminated, which reduces blind spots and increases workplace safety.
  • An ultrasonic sensor system monitors the environment as a complement to human eyesight – when visibility is poor, for example, or even at night. These sensors heighten operating safety by providing drivers unobstructed vision around the vehicle. A display shows drivers any obstacles, so they can react accordingly. The system is flexible as measurement ranges can be defined individually for each sensor.

Comfort:

  • The central user interface in the Genius CAB is the DI4-mid display and terminal, which can be operated using buttons or via the touchscreen. With a 7-inch display, the DI4 is a universally applicable control system that is freely programmable using the Codesys V3.5 development environment.
  • Another interface is the 4THE5 joystick. In excavators, for example, this input device controls functions such as shovel movements. At the same time, the joystick is an important interface not only to the DI4-mid terminal, but as well to other functions on the machine since its push buttons can be used to activate functions including the windshield wipers, side-view mirror replacement systems, and cab lighting.

In addition to the Genius CAB, Bosch will showcase many other technologies at CONEXPO/IFPE designed to enhance the operator experience for construction machinery.

Connected solutions for construction

The Bosch Central Gateway (CGW) is the central communication node that acts as a router for in-vehicle communication and through the connectivity control unit (CCU) to the outside. It is the gate for all data coming into the vehicle and is secured through functions such as firewall and intrusion detection. ETAS and ESCRYPT (both parts of the Bosch Group) provide the necessary transmission and encryption technologies that ensure functional safety and data security. The gateway enables secure software updates via the cloud or firmware over the air (FOTA) updates.

The Connectivity Control Unit or CCU from Bosch receives and transmits vehicle information via Bluetooth, WiFi, and/or LTE with a SIM card, enabling remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance and more. The CCU can also be used to determine the vehicle’s position using GPS, if desired.

Single picture, no blind spots

The Bosch Surround View EasyFit enables any vehicle or machine to be equipped with surround view functionality to improve visibility and safety for operators in the working area. The system combines image streams from four cameras and stitches them together in a single 360-degree bird’s-eye view picture free from blind spots. With a simple calibration algorithm, the system can be easily integrated into individual vehicles as series or retro-fit equipment.
