AmeriHealth Caritas to Host Leadership Summit Addressing Social Determinants of Health

Health plan brings focus on social and economic factors affecting health, Feb. 23 at Hotel Monaco

WASHINGTON--()--AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia, a member of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, will host a leadership summit — joining community partners alongside experts in housing, community development, and disease and violence prevention — to develop strategies for the next iteration of managed care. The summit, “Health is More than Health Care: Maximizing the Value of America’s Investment in Medicaid,” will convene tomorrow at the Hotel Monaco, 700 F Street, N.W. AmeriHealth Caritas Chairman and CEO Paul A. Tufano will kick off the summit at 9:30 a.m.

AmeriHealth Caritas, a mission-driven health care organization with more than 30 years of experience serving those most in need, is leading the conversation about providing more effective and efficient care by examining critical societal, economic, and environmental factors that influence health.

The evolution of managed care is about doing more to meet people where they are: risk factors, such as homelessness and violence, undermine our efforts to promote individual wellness and cultivate stable communities,” said AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia Market President Karen Dale. “The goal is to leverage our collective expertise to unlock barriers in the current system and find ways we can work to improve health outcomes — locally and nationally.”

The one-day event will focus on building integrated health solutions across business, medical, and community sectors, as participants engage in the following sessions:

  • Social Determinants of Health for the Individual and the Community.
  • Stabilizing Housing as a Health Care Initiative.
  • HIV, Health Care and Housing Delivery.
  • Housing and Health Care: Violence Intervention.

AmeriHealth Caritas has already begun laying the groundwork for these efforts. Homelessness, a social indicator linked to poor health outcomes, is a major issue in the District of Columbia. In its December 2016 report, “Hunger and Homelessness,” the U.S. Conference of Mayors reported that the District had the highest homeless rate among the nation’s 38 largest cities, with 124.4 homeless people per 10,000 residents.

Consistent with AmeriHealth Caritas’ mission to build healthier communities — along with Mayor Muriel Bowser’s pledge to essentially end all chronic homelessness by 2020 — AmeriHealth Caritas recently announced a multi-year plan to invest $250,000 in local organizations and programs addressing housing insecurity and the need for integrated support services in the District of Columbia.
