F4CP® Alerts Consumers to New Research: Over-the-Counter Medications Provide Limited to No Relief for Spinal Pain

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J.--()--Following documentation of reports which indicate that the common over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) is ineffective for spinal pain and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) provide reduced effectiveness, the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress® (F4CP), the leading voice of the chiropractic profession, asserts the value of chiropractic care prior to utilization of OTC and prescription pain relievers.

“Supporting evidence validates chiropractic as a safe, effective and drug-free alternative demonstrated to yield improved clinical outcomes and high patient satisfaction scores with respect to spinal pain,” states Sherry McAllister, DC, executive vice president, F4CP®. “Current data confirms that many common OTC pain relievers are taken in higher dosages than what is recommended. The safety of chiropractic care for spinal pain is even more impressive when you consider that the combination of two or more NSAIDs, or similarly, two or more acetaminophen pain relievers, increases the risk of health complications including ulcers, stomach bleeding, liver and kidney damage.”

According to the latest Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases study, not only did NSAIDs provide clinically unimportant effects in comparison to a placebo for spinal pain, but those patients also experienced a 2.5 times greater risk of suffering from gastrointestinal disorders.

Dr. McAllister adds, “It is critical to diagnose the cause of spinal pain rather than mask the symptoms with OTC and prescription drugs. There is a pressing need to catapult non-drug options to the forefront of pain management, and the care provided by a doctor of chiropractic (DC) can provide long-term relief.”

DC’s receive a minimum of seven years of higher education and are specifically trained to diagnose, evaluate and provide non-pharmaceutical care and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from acute and chronic back, low back and neck pain, headaches, neuro-musculoskeletal and other related conditions.
