BERTHOUD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blackeagle Energy Services (“Blackeagle”), a leader in the utility and energy industries, has been awarded the Distribution Contractors Association (“DCA”) Arthur T. Everham Safety Award. The DCA established the award in 1986 to recognize contractors with exceptional safety programs. Blackeagle tied for first place among companies that worked 470,000-1,000,000 man-hours in 2016 without a recordable safety incident.
Presented annually, the prestigious award is named for Mr. Everham, who founded a construction company in the early 1950s to serve the oil and natural gas industries. When he joined DCA, he advocated for safety in an industry that, at the time, was rife with hazards. After his passing, the DCA named its safety award for him.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do,” said Blackeagle President and CEO Rick Barrett. “It is central to our planning, execution and feedback systems. Our employees always put safety first and understand that safety is vital to themselves, our customers, the communities where we work and the success of our company. They deserve all the credit for this award because of their diligence on the job.”
This year 44 contractors were considered for the Arthur T. Everham Safety Award in four categories based on the number of hours worked without an incident. To determine the winners, DCA thoroughly reviews Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) logs and safety documentation.
Rigorous judging criteria include:
- the number of OSHA lost-workday cases,
- the number of OSHA restricted-duty days,
- the number of first-aid cases,
- the number of fatalities,
- the presence of a documented safety program,
- the use of a drug-testing program, and
- the experience modification rate (EMR), a number used by insurance companies to gauge both the past cost of injuries and future risk.
“This award validates the effectiveness of Blackeagle’s performance management system, of which safety is a key component,” said Blackeagle Director of Environmental Health and Safety George Bunker. “We build safety into our core standard operating procedures, starting with our rigorous employee selection and training process, which includes pre-employment integrity testing, skills-based onboarding and operator qualifications. We reinforce safe behavior with our good-catch recognition program, safety audits and weekly craft-level performance scorecards that span the life of our projects and reinforce our safety culture.”

The domain of DCA's contractor members is within city gates, where the final link for pipeline, cable and duct systems is made to individual residences and industrial complexes. Contractor members of the DCA are contractors who provide specific distribution construction services, including fiber optic, cable and duct installation, and the installation, replacement and rehabilitation of gas pipelines.
