San Onofre Community Engagement Panel to Discuss New Seismic Research

ROSEMEAD, Calif.--()--The San Onofre Community Engagement Panel (CEP) will discuss new research of Southern California seismic issues at its regular meeting Thursday in Dana Point. The CEP advises the owners of the retired San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) on decommissioning.

Dr. Neal Driscoll, a professor of geology and geophysics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, will present new research regarding known and hypothesized faults, mandated by the California Energy Commission to evaluate potential seismic impacts at the San Onofre nuclear plant. Two peer-reviewed reports are available on the San Onofre website, one published in Marine Geology and the other in Applied Geology in California.

In addition, Southern California Edison, the decommissioning agent on behalf of San Onofre’s owners, will introduce the decommissioning general contractor hired in December. SONGS Decommissioning Solutions, a joint venture of AECOM and EnergySolutions, will provide an overview of major dismantlement work scheduled to begin next year.

Tom Palmisano, SCE vice president and chief nuclear officer, will provide a decommissioning update.

The regular quarterly meeting will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, Dana Point. Staffed information booths will be open from 4:30-5:30 p.m. There will be a public comment period and the meeting will be live-streamed via songscommunity.com.

SCE announced in June 2013 that it would retire San Onofre Units 2 and 3, and had begun the process to decommission the facility. SCE has established core principles of safety, stewardship and engagement to guide decommissioning.
