Parade Introduces New eDP Tcon and Source Driver Chips for UHD Self-Refresh a-Si/Oxide/LTPS LCD Panels

New Display Panel Chips Support Partial Frame Refresh and Up To 5K Panel Resolution

SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--Parade Technologies, Ltd. (Taiwan OTC: 4966.TWO), a leading video display, touch controller, and high-speed interface IC supplier, today announced a new eDP Tcon that supports 4K resolution and embedded panels that include self-refresh and partial self-refresh capabilities. The company also announced a new complementary Source Driver that features Parade’s exclusive SIPI™ interface. The new DP696 eDP Tcon and TC2070 Source Driver, designed to be used in combination, offer the feature set and performance to enable very high LCD panel resolutions along with low power consumption to extend system battery life.

The DP696 eDP (Embedded DisplayPort) Tcon (Timing Controller) supports up to UHD display resolutions including 4096x2160 and 3840x2560 when implemented as a single chip. The DP696 can also be implemented in a self-synchronized, two-chip configuration to support higher resolutions including 7680x2160 or 5120x2880. To extend system battery life, the device supports panel self-refresh, including selective update, as specified in the VESA eDP Standard version 1.4b. The DP696 low power eDP interface, which supports up to four lanes at HBR2 (5.4Gbps), also supports the VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) standard that enables interface bit rate reduction to further reduce system power consumption.

The TC2070 Source Driver, which can be driven by the DP696 or other Parade Tcons, provides up to 1452 channels at 8-bit color depth, with up to 22 gamma correction levels. The device provides both 1:2 and 1:3 LTPS MUX support and runs off a low 1.5V logic supply. It is designed to be mounted directly onto the panel in a COG (Chip on Glass) configuration.

A key common ingredient of the DP696 and TC2070 is the support of the Parade SIPI™ (Scalable Intra Panel Interface) standard. SIPI provides a low power, low EMI, error-resilient, high-speed interface between the DP696 eDP Tcon and TC2070 Source Drivers. The DP696 supports up to 8 dual-channel SIPI ports that communicate across the COG interface to up to eight TC2070 devices. A bit rate of up to 1.6Gbps is supported by each channel.

In the past, use of the high display quality and low power LTPS LCD panel was limited to the high-volume smartphone market. But with newly expanded LPTS panel capacity in Asia, it is now feasible to apply this same technology to notebook/tablet applications. This is helping to drive 4K embedded displays into thin form factor portable systems, and the DP696 and TC2070 are ideal for such panel applications.

“With the ability to support panel self-refresh and the other capabilities of eDP 1.4b, the PS696 and TC2070 provide a low power solution for very high resolution embedded displays,” said Jimmy Chiu, Executive VP of Marketing at Parade Technologies. “Our unrivaled experience in eDP Tcon development plus our SIPI interface make a high level of display performance possible on a low-power platform.”

Availability

The DP696 and TC2070 are sampling now. The DP696 is offered in a WFBGA package, and the TC2070 is offered in a COG package.
