Secure Data in 19" Systems with New Lock-and-Key CompactPCI Cards

  • Keyed access protects against unauthorized card handling
  • Available on all CompactPCI cards
  • Mechanical security feature enhances data protection

BLUE BELL, Pa.--()--MEN Micro has enhanced data security on its CompactPCI cards by incorporating a keyed locking mechanism that helps protect against unauthorized card access and exchange. The new feature secures the card’s red unlocking button, requiring a key to access the ejector. This gives embedded system designers a way of securing cards in a 19” system that was not available before.

Security – Safe Hardware

The new feature was developed as part of a railway project for entertainment systems on trains to protect against the unauthorized exchange of the computing boards. Recognizing the end users concern over the lack of physically securing the cards within a system, MEN quickly developed this protection mechanism to limit access and removal of stored data.

The Internet of Things and cloud-based server applications has made data security crucial in any electronic system. While the main focus is typically on software development, the hardware also needs to fulfill the qualifications for secure communications and protection against external attacks for a system to be truly safe and reliable.

In addition to the new mechanical interlocking of CompactPCI cards, MEN Micro uses additional methods to achieve better security for the communication and programming of system hardware.

Examples include the use of TPM-enabled (Trusted Platform Module) chips, which facilitate encrypted data storage, and secure booting, a password-protected BIOS for additional anti-tampering protection, as well as security provided by “blacklisting”, i.e. blocking unauthorized applications.
