LONDON--()--Technavio analysts forecast the global automotive personal navigation systems market to grow at a CAGR of almost 15% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.

The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global automotive personal navigation systems market for 2016-2020. The market size is calculated through a bottom-up approach, which accounts for the total units sold per annum for different types of navigation systems used in vehicles.

The global navigation system market is a fast-growing one because of the technology advances in various navigation products and the increased number of applications from navigation data, leading to strong demand. In 2015, automotive application covered a 57.0% share of the use of global navigation systems, followed by pedestrians with a share of 38.6%. Considering the automotive vehicle growth in the forecast period, Technavio analysts believe that the automotive sector will cover more than 60% of the global navigation systems by 2020.

The global automotive personal navigation systems market is categorized into four segments by type of navigation systems:

  • Aftermarket IVS
  • Personal navigation device (PNDs)
  • Smartphones/tablets
  • Factory fitted IVS

In 2015, the aftermarket IVS segment led the global automotive navigation system market with a 37.08% share, followed by PNDs with a 36.47% share of the market. Even though the sales of smartphone/tablet units are in billions, the automotive share used for navigation covered only 19.47% of the market in 2015.

Technavio automotive analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global automotive personal navigation systems market:

  • Integration of navigation-supported safety features in vehicles
  • Free trials of advanced services up to 18 months
  • Integration of smartphones with IVS

Integration of navigation-supported safety features in vehicles

The rise in the number of on-road vehicles has increased accidents rates globally, reaching 1.25 million per year. This has created demand for more safety systems and technology for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Other than regulations over safety systems like airbags, manufacturers are incorporating safety-related applications via intelligent controls in the navigation system.

Siddharth Jaiswal, a lead automotive electronics analyst at Technavio, says, “ADAS is an example of such a system where the navigation device is built with additional sensors and intelligent units for tracking road conditions, safety-related information regarding roads, like open sewage, construction work in progress, or speed breakers. The other driving feature is the lane assistance system in which the navigation system software can suggest any sudden lane changing activity and alert the driver.”

Free trials of advanced services up to 18 months

More than 1 million apps related to navigation are in use by smartphone/tablets, PNDs, and IVS. Key mobile stores, like Apple Store and Google play store, previously sold some of these apps with price points ranging from USD 5 to USD 20. Now, the market is flooded with a plethora of free apps with the rise in the adoption of navigation systems in the automotive sector.

Even TomTom and Garmin, which previously offered their map database based on various price levels, are now offering free trials for full country maps and speed tracker cameras for up to 18 months from the date of device purchase. To promote handset-based navigation systems, TomTom is offering free updates for the map database and lifetime TomTom traffic through smartphones,” adds Siddharth.

Integration of smartphones with IVS

The connectivity of smartphones in vehicles has a high adoption rate among customers, which is driving the growth of the smartphone/tablet-based navigation systems with features such as low costs, portability, and easy-to-use operating systems. For instance, Apple's car integration CarPlay interface is available through Pioneer's aftermarket IVS.

However, most features available in infotainment systems, such as access to media content, navigation systems, Internet connectivity, and social networking applications are available on mobile devices, which may act as a barrier to the growth of existing automobile infotainment systems. Therefore, to tap into the consumers' changing demands, OEMs are collaborating with smartphones and tablet manufacturers to provide in-vehicle products and services.
