CAGW Applauds Sen. Lankford's "Federal Fumbles" Waste Report

WASHINGTON--()--Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) praised Sen. James Lankford’s (R-Okla.) second annual government waste report, “Federal Fumbles: 100 Ways the Government Dropped the Ball,” which reveals $247 billion in wasteful federal spending.

The report contains 100 examples of wasteful government spending and ridiculous regulations. Sen. Lankford throws penalty flags on agencies, programs, and projects that consistently squander taxpayer funds. Most importantly, the report also details how taxpayers can make the recovery and eliminate the waste.

Federal Fumbles highlights several items and solutions that CAGW has also brought to light in Prime Cuts 2016 and the Congressional Pig Book, such as reducing the massive $142.7 billion of government-wide improper payments, making sure agencies and departments act on commonsense recommendations from their Office of Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office, eliminating the duplicative Delta Regional Authority, updating the security of the information technology (IT) systems at the Office of Personnel and Management in order to prevent cyber attacks, spending $55 billion on legacy IT systems, wasting $180 million in an effort to update the Department of Homeland Security’s IT systems, continuing to process federal employee retirement benefits using paper, and eliminating the subsidy to successful organic farmers.

CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “With the national debt driving toward $20 trillion, it is clear that wasteful government spending must be sacked. Sen. Lankford’s second edition of Federal Fumbles has successfully built on the legacy of his predecessor, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who worked tirelessly to expose Washington’s profligate spending habits. Sen. Lankford should be celebrated for taking the handoff from Sen. Coburn and continuing to move the ball down the field so that taxpayers can score a few touchdowns in the fight to curb wasteful federal spending.”
