McCarthy Holdings Promotes Felipe Engineer-Manriquez to Corporate Lean Manager

Lean design and construction practices enhance collaboration and deliver greater certainty for clients.

ST. LOUIS--()--McCarthy Holdings, Inc. is pleased to announce that Felipe Engineer-Manriquez has been selected to serve as the firm’s first Corporate Lean Manager. In this role, Engineer-Manriquez is responsible for overseeing McCarthy’s comprehensive Lean program for the family of McCarthy companies including McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., MC Industrial, Inc. and Castle Contracting, LLC. He is based in McCarthy’s Southern California regional headquarters in Newport Beach, Calif.

According to the Lean Construction Institute, Lean design and construction is defined as an adaption of lean manufacturing principles to the complete design and construction process. With a focus on continuous improvement in all aspects of a project, Lean emphasizes delivering value to the customer while maintaining respect for people as the other cornerstone of the process.

“When we introduced McCarthy’s innovative ‘Quality Without Question Program’ more than a decade ago, Lean principles were at the foundation of our approach to plan for quality from day one, and then track and communicate regularly to continuously improve outcomes,” explained Chad Dorgan, McCarthy vice president of quality and sustainability. “Felipe’s passion for this approach will help us deliver even greater value for clients and partners.” Currently, McCarthy is implementing Lean principles on nearly 100 active projects.

With 15 years of experience in the construction industry, Engineer-Manriquez joined McCarthy in 2008 as an assistant project manager. Since then he has helped deliver a variety of projects in the healthcare, education and entertainment markets. In 2014, he was promoted to project manager to help oversee the construction of the $82 million Chapman University Musco Center for the Arts, implementing Lean construction practices to maximize efficiency and deliver increased owner value. Acoustics were the owner’s number one priority. Adjustments to the interior acoustic systems were made throughout the construction phase to deliver a state-of-the-art world-class performance center. The team successfully incorporated nearly $10 million in design changes while maintaining the originally planned construction schedule without compromising any acoustical performance characteristics. The entire project team responded to changes in a dynamic way, innovatively implementing Lean tools on a traditional design, bid, build project. The facility successfully opened with a feature performance by opera legend Plácido Domingo.

“Today, our integrated teams are delivering complex projects, faster,” commented Engineer-Manriquez. “Starting to implement Lean early in the design phase helps us deliver greater certainty for clients throughout the entire process. Streamlining the best of what works, eliminating what doesn’t and doing so in a collaborative way that respects the people pulling it all together is what makes Lean so powerful. I’m looking forward to working with client and project teams to put the power of Lean to work.”

Engineer-Manriquez currently chairs McCarthy’s National Lean Committee, comprised of Lean practitioners, designers and quality professionals across the company. A committed Lean practitioner, he is an active member of the Lean Construction Institute and a LEED AP BD+C with the United States Green Building Council. He also is a Certified ScrumMaster with the Scrum Alliance and a Project Management Professional through the Project Management Institute. Engineer-Manriquez holds a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
