SmartBear has two speakers at APIStrat. Ole Lensmar is presenting, “Testing Your APIs with Cucumber,” and Amber Fallon is presenting, “The Big Problem with the Big Picture.”

BDD with Cucumber is gaining in popularity as it allows the expression of requirements using a custom domain-specific language that can be executed as tests to validate actual implementations. APIs, in particular, seem to have a lot to gain from this approach as they are often technical in nature. It seems that a correctly performed Cucumber implementation should allow increasingly non-technical stakeholders to participate in defining the requirements for an API’s behavior and functionality. Ole Lensmar discusses how non-technical Cucumber vocabularies can be made to describe something as inherently technical as APIs. He also shares how the usage of Cucumber scales as the complexity of an API increases, and how standards like Swagger make Cucumber testing even more intuitive.

Prior to SmartBear, Ole co-founded Eviware Software, acquired by SmartBear in 2011, and also co-founded base8, an XML oriented consulting company in 1996, acquired by the publicly traded Mogul in 1998. Ole worked as CTO, product owner and lead evangelist for Mogul’s software portfolio, including an XML based CMS and a high performance search engine. At Eviware Software, Ole created SoapUI, the most used open source testing tool in the world with five million downloads and one million active users. Follow him on Twitter @olensmar.

In Amber Fallon’s talk, she discusses the challenges of managing public APIs in a way that fosters growth of dependent APIs, scaling up, maintaining SLA and allowing for the versatility of user created applications. API may be used in ways never envisioned. She also addresses challenges like sandboxing at scale, aiding in end user integrations and managing the infinite number of dependencies that larger APIs may encounter. Prior to her position as Sales Engineer at SmartBear, Amber held various technical support roles for Dynatrace and Compuware. Follow her on Twitter @smartbearamber.
