Yes on 61 Campaign: Drug Companies Making You Sick? Sign the ‘WhiteHouse.gov’ Petition for Lower Drug Prices

Backers of Prop. 61 in California seek 100,000 signatures on petition calling on President Obama to speak out and address the problem of runaway drug pricing. NOTE: signers do NOT need to live in California—only anywhere in the U.S.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--()--With two weeks left to the November election, backers of California’s ‘Yes on 61’ ballot measure campaign have launched a WhiteHouse.gov petition calling on President Obama to support Prop. 61, a statewide California ballot measure that allows California to leverage its massive negotiating power to achieve lower drug prices for the most vulnerable Californians. The ‘Yes on 61’ campaign seeks to achieve the required 100,000 signatures in record time, and note that signers do NOT necessarily have to live in California to sign—citizens concerned about high drug prices living anywhere in the U.S. may sign the petition. The ‘Yes on 61’ WhiteHouse.gov petition language:

The undersigned hereby call on President Barack Obama to support and endorse Proposition 61, the California Drug Price Relief Act, on the ballot on November 8, and support the tenets of the ballot measure as a first step toward getting control over the outrageous spike in the prices of prescription drugs. This is an acute healthcare crisis that threatens not only the health, well-being and lives of American citizens, but imperils the solvency of public healthcare programs at the Federal and state levels. In the absence of any action on drug prices by a Congress that is paralyzed and afraid to act in the face of drug industry lobbying and campaign contributions, Proposition 61 deserves the public support of the President of the United States.

Background on Prop. 61

Proposition 61 would require the state of California to negotiate with drug companies for drug prices that are no more than is paid for the same drugs by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). Unlike Medicare, the DVA negotiates for drug prices on behalf of the millions of veterans it serves, and pays on average 20-24 percent less for medications than other government agencies, and up to 40 percent less than Medicare Part D. Prop. 61 empowers the state, as the healthcare buyer for millions of Californians, to negotiate a better deal for taxpayers, saving the state billions.

Prop. 61 Endorsements
