HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WaterVest LLC, a startup focusing on alleviating water insecurity, thinks logistics and the “last-mile” problem is as big an issue as the existence of clean water, and is working to address it. “In many cases clean water may be available nearby, but the burden of moving it the last mile is the biggest challenge,” says Michael Hopmeier, one of the founders. The goal is to provide a transportation device used to deliver water from a clean source to its point of consumption, solving the last mile problem.
Water insecurity affects 1.1 billion people around the world and is considered the #1 threat to 15% of the world population. Most people consider the problem to be a lack of water, and in many cases it is. However, WaterVest LLC thinks there may be more to it than that, and is trying to help solve the problem.
To address this, WaterVest has developed a patent pending large-capacity vest for carrying and storing water (up to about 8 gallons or 30 liters; enough to sustain a small family for three days) made from low cost food safe plastic that is carried over the shoulders (like a vest) or on a bike, pack animal, truck, etc. This results in fewer trips to transport water, reduction in disease due to elimination of “double dipping,” or sharing utensils, more time available to contribute to family, educational opportunities and community development. One design even allows for solar heating of the water so it can be used for cooking without having to burn wood or fuel that adversely impacts the environment.
WaterVest LLC has partnered with Infinitum Humanitarian Systems (IHS), an international “profit-for-purpose” company consulting in the humanitarian sciences, for testing to validate the design and durability of the WaterVest. Initial testing with IHS will take place later this year in a slum on the northern outskirts of Manila in the Philippines where there is a current crisis in providing clean drinking water. WaterVest may prove to be an outstanding addition to their compact low power water purification system, simplifying “the last mile” clean water delivery to homes using our low-cost, low-tech method of carrying water from a disinfecting source to the point of consumption. Our long term goal is the easy delivery of safe drinking water, perhaps the most critical human need, to those who need it most.
