PISCATAWAY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) today announced two IEEE standards have received a first place award in the China Standards Innovation and Award competition, a prestigious national awards program approved by National Appraisal Standards Work Coordination Group of the Standard Administration of The People’s Republic of China (SAC). A team led by IEEE-SA member Prof. Daidi Zhong was awarded for its work on the development of two standards within the IEEE 11073™ Health informatics – Personal health device communication standards family.

The China Standards Innovation and Contribution Awards recognized 10 first place projects, with judges considering over 167 applications from more than 100 national ministries, industry associations, provincial quality administrations and subordinate standardization administrations. First place winners are awarded for standards that demonstrate a direct impact on improving society and bringing economic benefits to industry within The People’s Republic of China. The awarded project, comprised of IEEE–Personal health device communications standards, IEEE 11073TM-10441—Cardiovascular fitness and activity monitor and IEEE 11073TM-00103—General, was recognized for enhancing the safety and quality of personal connected health systems and enabling scalability and interoperability.

Sponsored by the IEEE EMBS, IEEE 11073 standards are utilized to structure data and enable data transmission across multiple healthcare devices, ensuring effective interoperability and communication between medical, health care and wellness devices, as well as with external computer systems. They provide detailed electronic data capture of client-related information, such as vital signs information, as well as operational data from personal healthcare devices. In effect, IEEE 11073 standards address the complexity of securing and exchanging personal medical information while also structuring it for clinical use.
