A Prairie Home Companion Season Premiere This Weekend

Jack White, Lake Street Dive and Comedian Maeve Higgins to Perform on the October 15 Season Premiere of A Prairie Home Companion with Host Chris Thile - This Weekend!

ST. PAUL, Minn.--()--A Prairie Home Companion’s new season debuts this weekend on Saturday, October 15, with new host Chris Thile and musical guests Jack White and Lake Street Dive, and comedian Maeve Higgins, live from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Rounding out the show will be The First Call Radio Players, a brand new band created by Thile with Richard Dworsky, Chris Eldridge, Brittany Haas, Paul Kowert, Ted Poor and vocalist Sarah Jarosz. Also on hand: the Royal Academy of Radio Actors, featuring Tim Russell, Serena Brook and sound effects wizard Fred Newman. To top things off, Thile will be composing and performing a brand new song to mark the occasion (the “Song of the Week” will be a regular feature).

Guests for the remaining fall broadcasts from the Fitz include Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Anaïs Mitchell, and John Hodgman on October 22, and Esperanza Spalding, Dawes and Aparna Nancherla on October 29.

A limited number of tickets for the fall run at the Fitzgerald Theater are now on sale via eTix—see below for detailed information. More information about these St. Paul broadcasts and additional tour shows this season is available at http://prairiehome.org/events/

After the fall run at the Fitz, Thile takes the show on the road with live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion in Philadelphia (November 12), Denver (November 19), back to back shows at The Town Hall in New York (December 3 and 10), Seattle, (January 7), Chicago (January 14), Pasadena (January 21), and Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium (February 4) before wrapping up the live shows back at the Fitz on February 11 and 18.

The October shows begin a new chapter for one of the most popular public radio programs, as Thile (THEEL-ee) takes over for Garrison Keillor as the new host, bringing a fresh approach to an audience favorite.

The only live music and variety show aired nationwide today, A Prairie Home Companion is a Saturday night staple for radio audiences everywhere. The show features a unique blend of musical performances and comedy. For 42 years, the program has built a large and loyal audience, with nearly 3.2 million fans from around the world tuning in to enjoy the show each week.

Chris Thile was hand-selected by Garrison Keillor—“the best idea I’ve had since Powdermilk Biscuits”—to take over as host of the famed and long-running live radio variety show. Chris—a multiple Grammy Award-winner, MacArthur Fellow and a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek—is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist.

A Prairie Home Companion is produced by American Public Media and sponsored nationally by Viking River Cruises.
