WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.--()--With interest growing in how landfills can benefit local communities, the public and media are invited to tour Prince William Energy, a renewable landfill gas to energy (LFG) plant at the Prince William County Landfill. The tour is part of the Prince William Recycles Day event on Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The LFG plant owner/operator Fortistar, management specialists focused on investments in energy sources for transitioning to a zero carbon economy, is a sponsor of the annual free event.

Fortistar’s 6.8 MW LFG plant generates enough clean, renewable energy to power more than 4,355 homes. The company financed, built and operates the plant; the energy is purchased by NOVEC to power local homes.

“Municipalities and companies are increasingly looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Capturing greenhouse gases from landfill trash and converting it into renewable energy is a cost effective, winning solution for every community,” said Mark Comora, President of Fortistar. “We’re proud to be a partner with both Prince William County and NOVEC and congratulate the County on a fantastic community event.”

Prince William County residents and local media are encouraged to attend this family-friendly event, which is organized and hosted by the County, to learn more about the importance of recycling, reuse and waste reduction and how that benefits the local environment and the economy. This free event will feature “Recyclemania” by Billy B. Plus, landfill tours, lots of fun games, prizes, face painting, free food, music, a recycled art display, and interactive equipment displays and trucks.

“The Prince William County Solid Waste Division staff look forward to our annual America Recycles Day event and we appreciate the support that our sponsors and operational partners provide us each year,” said Deborah Campbell, Prince William County Solid Waste Division. “Fortistar has been exceptional partner and sponsor of our event for the past several years and without this type of support we could not have grown our education outreach to a level where we anticipate and prepare for about 1,000 people from throughout the Prince William community.”

Details on the event are available at www.pwcgov.org/trashandrecycling.

LFG to energy programs are widely supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and local governments as a significant mechanism for reducing potent greenhouse gas emissions and a reliable source of renewable energy for local communities. According to the EPA, landfills are the third-largest source of human-related methane emissions in the United States. At the same time, methane emissions from landfills represent an opportunity to capture and generate a significant energy resource.

For more than 30 years as a privately-owned firm, Fortistar has built, invested in and managed an unparalleled portfolio of successful co-generation and other transitional clean energy generation projects in the U.S. and Canada. Fortistar’s ability to forge strong relationships with partners and local communities has been a hallmark of company’s formula for success.
