Atalaya Capital Management Hires Young Kwon to Lead Real Estate Investment Strategy

NEW YORK--()--Atalaya Capital Management announced today that it has hired Young Kwon, a veteran real estate investor with extensive experience and success in a wide range of real estate asset classes, as a Managing Director. Mr. Kwon will head Atalaya’s real estate investment efforts in equity, debt, and structured products.

Mr. Kwon joins Atalaya from Apollo Global Management, where he was a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager responsible for a variety of credit-related real estate investments including CMBS, first mortgages, B-notes, mezzanine debt, preferred equity, and equity. While at Apollo, he played an instrumental role in growing assets under management for credit-related real estate investments, managing a peak of $2.3 billion in securities and credit related investments. Mr. Kwon also helped lead Apollo’s efforts to integrate operating partners and service providers. Prior to Apollo, Mr. Kwon was a Portfolio Manager at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, where he managed the $6.5 billion Mortgage Private Placement Fund and was a member of the Investment Committee in the U.S. Fixed Income Group.

Ivan Zinn, Atalaya’s Founder and Chief Investment Officer, said, “Atalaya’s historic strength has been in identifying and capitalizing on private credit investment opportunities, with real estate as one of our three core areas of expertise. We have invested in more than 100 real estate-related transactions over the past five years and expect strong continued investment opportunity. Young’s deep real estate experience will help us capitalize on our existing mandate and, over time, expand our reach.”

Atalaya’s real estate strategy has primarily focused on:

  • Bridge and transitional lending;
  • Commercial and residential real estate loan and security purchases from diverse financial sellers; and
  • Select asset purchases and equity-oriented investments.

With Mr. Kwon’s addition, Atalaya will continue to execute on its existing real estate strategy while developing new real estate-specific sub-strategies that remain off-the-run and underserved by the broader marketplace.
