PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On the heels of being named a 2016 Most Admired Leader by the Phoenix Business Journal, the Arizona Technology Council today announced that President and CEO Steven G. Zylstra has been named the Leader of the Year in Public Policy in the technology category by the Arizona Capitol Times. The honor is a testament to Zylstra’s hard work and influence in Arizona’s technology industry. He has significantly raised the Council’s role in public policy, and has positioned the organization as one of the state’s leaders in driving a pro-growth, business-focused state and federal technology agenda. He will receive the award in a reception and cocktail event on October 13, 2016, at the Sheraton Grand Phoenix.
“I cannot think of a more deserving individual for this distinguished award,” said Bob Witwer, vice president of Advanced Technology at Honeywell Aerospace and chairman of the board of the Arizona Technology Council. “Steve continually informs and educates policy makers on issues that are important to Arizona's technology community and testifies before the Legislature on a regular basis. I look forward to seeing his vigorous efforts continue to pay off as Arizona’s potential as a technology hub flourishes.”
Zylstra has been president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council since 2007. He is an articulate and passionate spokesperson for the value that technology can provide in raising social and economic standards in Arizona, and is a leading advocate for improving STEM education. A servant leader who has always given back to the community in a significant way, Zylstra currently serves on numerous committees and boards.
“It is an honor to be recognized for the public policy work of the Council that is so incredibly important to strengthening Arizona’s economy,” said Zylstra. “I am very fortunate to work with great staff, Council members and partners — all of whom share the mission of creating new jobs by expanding technology business in Arizona.”
Under Zylstra’s leadership, the Council’s Public Policy Committee is directly involved with the process of evaluating Arizona’s legislative candidates. The Council publishes an annual Public Policy Guide and biennial Vote TechSmart Guide to help AZTC members and the technology industry navigate elections and the annual legislative session. The Council also holds an annual Legislative Day, an event designed to provide Council members and the community at large the opportunity to have their voices heard as it relates to public policy in the technology sector. Finally, Zylstra and Council members take an annual trip to Washington, D.C., to meet Arizona’s congressional delegation to discuss key initiatives and opportunities within the state.
In order to best serve the technology industry’s interests and advocate for what is best for the overall economy, the Council works directly with Public Policy Partners, a full- service government relations firm. Their collaboration is critical to the success of the Council.
From energy and risk capital to aerospace and cybersecurity, the Council’s policy interests can be found in its 2016 Public Policy Guide.
