BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For almost a decade, researchers have debated the merits of invisibility cloaks, and provoked the question: “Where are they?”
Can you actually see a demonstration of an invisibility cloak? “Hundreds have,” says invisibility cloak “source” inventor and physicist Nathan Cohen, who has given microwave demonstrations at several IEEE meetings, Radio Club of America, amateur radio conferences, and Yale University, among others. With a keynote demonstration at the recent Electronic Design Innovation Conference (EDIC) in Boston, Cohen showed the “definitive demo, delighting and exciting an audience of engineers.”
Cohen and his team at Fractal Antenna Systems came up with a simple and irrefutable example of cloaking. Using an aluminum metal “wall,” the firm’s proprietary fractal metamaterials produced a cloak that made the wall disappear, slipping microwaves around to the other side.

“Like many breakthrough technologies, invisibility cloaks have inertia to overcome. Too many people speculated cloaking was a lens or diffraction effect, with round or cylindrical cloaks at close (electrical) distances only, and not novel applied physics. But nothing gets through a wall, so we conquered a wall with cloaking, slip-streaming microwaves around it,” noted Cohen. This showed that cloaking is something novel and not described by conventional lensing nor diffraction.
Physics textbooks are definitive in showing that walls cause deep shadows, and only feeble “knife edge diffraction” can seep around a wall. “That is no longer true. Fractal metamaterials, as cloaks, produce ‘front scatter’ for walls at almost the same intensity as there being no wall at all. To be charitable, your physics text is now incomplete,” states Cohen.
In the next two years, Cohen says the firm will have cloaking products. “We have nicely encircled this new technology with a half-dozen basic patents, and detailed a number of places where cloaking benefits end-users.” Will Harry Potter be one of them? “No, Harrys will have to deal with the world and not hide from it. But when there is a clear need for visual light cloaks, we are ready to take them on. For now, it’s microwave and infrared.”
