Humana Named Health Care Industry Leader by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

In its 10th consecutive year being included in the indices, Humana leads “health care providers and services sector” for fourth year in a row

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--()--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) announced today that it has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index. Humana is one of only six U.S. health care companies selected for the 2016 DJSI World Index.

This acknowledgment marks the tenth consecutive year Humana has been recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and the fourth year DJSI has singled out Humana as the leader among health care providers & services companies, in part because Humana “assumes an active role in the search for solutions and the creation of effective, sustainable health care systems by engaging with all relevant stakeholder groups.”

“We are honored to be recognized for the tenth year in a row for our sustainability efforts and responsible social and economic practices,” said Bruce Broussard, Humana’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “It’s rewarding to see our dedication to responsible business practices and improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve being acknowledged year after year.”

Humana was recognized as the industry leader among eight health care companies included in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index this year. This leadership position resulted from Humana surpassing the industry average across the three core scoring areas, which include economic, environmental and social dimensions – all of which are priorities for Humana. The DJSI rating criteria point out that “companies in this industry should focus on health outcomes and quality of care, prevention and disease management, and continuous improvement in customer-oriented services and strategic alliances across traditional business boundaries.”

In 2015, Humana announced its 2020 goal: “The communities we serve will be 20 percent healthier by 2020 because we make it easy for people to achieve their best health.” One way of reaching that goal is to run a sustainable business. Examples of doing so include holding itself to high ethical and compliance standards; encouraging associate volunteerism; minimizing its environmental footprint through waste-reduction efforts; and collaborating with community organizations to improve the health of the communities it serves.

As a result of its ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, Humana has received recognition from other notable, third-party organizations including:

  • Earning a 100 percent score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index in 2016
  • Earning a ranking of No. 65 on CR Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens list in 2016
  • Earning a ranking of No. 18 in the 2016 Newsweek Green Rankings of U.S. companies
  • Being recognized as a Military Times Best for Vets Employer and earning a ranking of No. 27 in 2016
