Universal Laser Systems and MakerSpace Launch Cooperation in Garching near Munich, Germany, with ULS Multiwave Hybrid™ Technology

VIENNA--()--Universal Laser Systems, Inc. (ULS), the world’s leader in equipment for laser material processing, has installed an XLS10MWH laser system with the patented Multiwave Hybrid™ technology at MakerSpace’s facilities in Garching near Munich, Germany. This advanced laser system represents top-of-the-line laser material processing technology and will greatly expand the high-end capabilities of the growing MakerSpace community.

As part of UnternehmerTUM, which is the Center for Innovation and Business Creation at the Technical University of Munich, MakerSpace provides its user community access to a broad range of machines, tools and software at its 1,500 sq. meter facility in Garching. MakerSpace users have already enjoyed access to three VLS systems from Universal Laser Systems in MakerSpace’s extensive fleet, and the new class XLS system with Multiwave Hybrid technology will open up new frontiers in laser material processing.

The greater Munich area is a key technology center for Germany and has proven to be a hot-bed for innovative start-ups. With its offering, MakerSpace is actively supporting the entrepreneurial community and helping new ideas in the areas of technology and design take shape. Phill Handy, General Manager at MakerSpace, is excited about the strengthened cooperation with Universal Laser Systems. “The new XLS system is cutting edge and has capabilities that will further spur the creativity of our user community and open up possibilities for students at the Technical University of Munich to undertake sophisticated research projects.”

Joe Hillman, Materials Science Engineer and Strategic Development Manager for Universal Laser Systems, states that “The XLS system will enable MakerSpace members to process a myriad of materials including plastic films, industrial films, engineering plastics, laminating adhesives, composite materials as well as many others.”

The industry-first Multiwave Hybrid laser system combines beams from multiple lasers into a single, hybrid laser beam. Users can leverage this technology to combine a number of different laser power levels and wavelengths. For example, 1.06 µm, 9.3 µm and 10.6 µm laser beams can be combined in any proportion to create a number of desired effects on various materials. Additionally, users can independently control each laser.

Universal Laser Systems’ Business Development Manager for EMEA, Gerardo Igler, sees great potential for the cooperation with MakerSpace. “The combination of research, innovation and industry found in the MakerSpace community is truly unique, and Universal Laser Systems is excited about placing its flagship platform into such a vibrant and creative environment.”
