Aetna Better Health Gives $100,000 in Community Grants in Virginia

Supporting enhancing quality of care, quality of life with funds and human resources

RICHMOND, Va.--()--Aetna Better Health of Virginia, a Medicaid health plan contracted with the Commonwealth of Virginia, has announced it is making $100,000 in community grants to five Virginia non-profit organizations that focus on improving the health care and quality of life of Virginians.

The grants are:

  • $50,000 to The Health Wagon, a non-profit that operates a mobile clinic and two stationary clinics in southwest Virginia. The grant will pay for a full-time care and resource coordinator. Aetna Better Health also will embed a community health worker in The Health Wagon to work with the new coordinator to serve Aetna Better Health members.
  • $20,000 to Virginia Supportive Housing (VSH), a non-profit that helps homeless people find stable housing in multi-family properties. Aetna Better Health also will co-locate community health workers and case managers in the 650 housing units in 15 communities operated by VSH. Aetna Better Health employees will volunteer and collect kitchen, bedroom and cleaning supplies.
  • $20,000 to the YMCA of Central Virginia Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program to provide scholarships for children in first to third grade in low-income areas. The program helps participating children retain and grow reading skills while also offering enrichment through arts and crafts, visits to local parks and libraries and other activities.
  • $8,000 to the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Health Expedition in Wise, Va. to enhance its efforts to provide free dental, medical and vision services to individuals and families who live in isolated area and are medically underserved.
  • $2,500 to the Alzheimer's Association of Central and Western Virginia for its annual Walk to End Alzheimer's®. The Alzheimer's Association is the largest non-profit funder of Alzheimer's research.

"We are so pleased to help these organizations, who are doing so much to improve the lives of Virginians," said Roger Gunter, chief executive officer of Aetna Better Health of Virginia.
