In a Category of Its Own – JDA and the Category Management Association Launch CatMan 2.0™

JDA is the only supply chain vendor involved in designing the CMA’s new roadmap for achieving retail success via increased shopper focus

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--()--JDA Software Group, Inc. has partnered with the Category Management Association (CMA) to design and launch a revolutionary collection of advanced processes and best practices aimed at helping retailers and manufacturers achieve strong financial results in today’s omni-channel marketplace. Developed by the CMA, CatMan 2.0™ is a new roadmap for success and recognizes today’s increased need to understand and meet consumer demand at a very personalized level. JDA was the only supply chain vendor included among an exclusive consortium of category management leaders from retailers, manufacturers and solution providers to support the development of CatMan 2.0, the first comprehensive improvement in this important process in two decades.

CatMan 2.0 builds on the basic tenets of CatMan 1.0™, one of the most successful business processes of the 20th century. Developed by the CMA — a worldwide professional organization with 7,200 members — CatMan 1.0 was founded on the concept of open information sharing. For the first time, this model brought manufacturers and retailers together to anticipate market needs by gathering and studying a common set of consumer data.

This next-generation framework for category management success will be unveiled at the CatMan 2.0 Delivery Tour, kicking off on July 20 in Chicago. It will feature speakers from JDA and the CMA as well as Market Track, McKee Foods Corporation, Walgreens, and Interactive Edge and Decision Insights, providing an in-depth look at CatMan 2.0.

“While the underlying tenets of CatMan 1.0 are still valid — especially its emphasis on understanding shopper needs — the retail landscape has changed dramatically since CatMan 1.0 was widely adopted in the early 1990s. In today’s omni-channel world, retailers and manufacturers need to target consumer demand at a more detailed level than ever. Fortunately, they have a new generation of tools available to accomplish that, but they often require guidance to apply today’s advanced tools and processes in an optimal manner,” said Gordon Wade, senior vice president, Best Practices Business Unit at the Category Management Association.

“CatMan 2.0 is a new framework for success that recognizes the emergence of Big Data, the advanced analytics that can be applied to that data, the diversification of the retail environment, the new power wielded by consumers and other trends,” Wade continued. “This collection of best practices will help today’s retailers and manufacturers optimize their performance in assortment management, pricing, merchandising, promotions and other areas.”
