Technavio Announces Top Three Emerging Trends Impacting the Global Smoothies Market Through 2020

LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest report on the global smoothies market provides an analysis on the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

Arushi Thakur, an industry expert at Technavio, specializing in research on non-alcoholic beverages sector, says, “The global smoothies market is growing at a steady rate and is likely to grow at the same rate during the forecast period as well. A rise in health conscious population coupled with preventive food habits is fueling the growth of the global smoothies market. Preventive foods habits indicate consumption of healthy foods with some functional benefits and added vitamins and minerals. These foods minimize the risk of health-related issues and increase the immunity and strength of the body.”

The top three emerging trends driving the global smoothies market according to Technavio research analysts are:

  • Growing number of smoothie franchises and outlets
  • Increasing popularity of organic and non-GMO smoothies
  • Innovations in packaging industry

Growing number of smoothie franchise and outlets

As a result of the growing demand for smoothies, manufacturers are expanding their operations across the globe. They are opening new stores and outlets to increase their working geography and consumer base. Jamba Juice, one of the leading smoothie chains in the US, will expand its operations across the globe with more than 600 new cafes in the pipeline. The company plans to expand in countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and Canada.

Booster, a Canadian smoothie and juice chain, is also looking to expand its international network via airport locations. The company operates more than 300 outlets in Canada, the US, and Mexico. It operates in four Canadian airports: Toronto Pearson (two outlets), Edmonton (two), Halifax Stanfield, and Vancouver.

Smoothie King franchises are also expanding and it will add 10 more stores in Louisiana by 2017. This smoothie chain operates in more than 500 locations in the US. The company is strategically planning to expand and add more than 900 franchised and corporate locations during the forecast period, in the Southeast, mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Northeast regions.

Increasing popularity of organic and non-GMO smoothies

Organic smoothies are not made from fruits and vegetables that are artificially ripened and sprayed with harmful pesticides and chemicals. Consumers are concerned about the origin and quality of fruits and vegetables that are used in the preparation of smoothies. “Organic smoothies are priced higher than normal juice and contain useful nutrients derived from fruits and vegetables. They are rich in minerals and antioxidants and are safe for consumption,” says Arushi.

Dr. Smoothies, one of the leading players in the market, provides organic smoothies at a competitive price. Some of the other organic smoothies providers are Odwalla, Simply Balanced, The Cold Press Organic Beverage, B'more Organic, and GreenFix Organic Smoothie.

Innovations in packaging industry

Innovations and advances in technology in the packaging industry have had a positive impact on the market. The new packages have a longer shelf life and detailed information about the nutritional content of the juice. These packages do not need refrigeration till they are opened. This has helped vendors transport their goods to remote areas, making it convenient for consumers to purchase them in these areas. Most vendors use bottles that are free from Bisphenol A (BPA) for packaging. Single-serve packs, grab and go, and stand-up pouches are convenient to use and have been designed keeping in mind the requirements of consumers.
