Woodman’s of Essex Celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Fried Clam

Woodman’s Signature Invention Enjoys 100 Years of Delicious Success

ESSEX, Mass.--()--On that historic day of the invention of the fried clam Chubby and Bessie Woodman knew they were onto something big when they wrote on the back of their marriage certificate – “fried the first fried clam - in the town on Essex – July 3, 1916.” While frying a batch of their potato chips, a local clammer jokingly suggested frying up a clam. Everyone laughed, yet later that day Chubby and Bessie experimented with frying up some shucked clams and the result was delicious. Visit http://www.woodmans.com/about/the-story-of-the-fried-clam/ for the full story.

One hundred years and five generations later, on July 3rd, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m. the Woodman family will commemorate this notable event with a landmark celebration at their famous restaurant in Essex, where a new sign proudly announces the proclamation of July 3rd as “National Fried Clam Day!”

Guests will enjoy a free fried clam sample (cooked by descendants of Chubby) provided by Woodman’s loyal clam vendors Ipswich Shellfish and Ipswich Maritime as well as local brew from the Ipswich Ale beer wagon. Entertainment from Dave Birkin will liven up the hourly giveaways of tee-shirts, gift cards, and more. The day will be filled with other surprises and the Woodman family invites everyone to celebrate with them at this fun and commemorative event.
