ESSEX, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On that historic day of the invention of the fried clam Chubby and Bessie Woodman knew they were onto something big when they wrote on the back of their marriage certificate – “fried the first fried clam - in the town on Essex – July 3, 1916.” While frying a batch of their potato chips, a local clammer jokingly suggested frying up a clam. Everyone laughed, yet later that day Chubby and Bessie experimented with frying up some shucked clams and the result was delicious.
