DigitalC Begins Work to Catalyze Technology for Community Impact

New civic tech collaboration partners to provide technology-driven programs that help communities thrive in the 21st century

CLEVELAND--()--DigitalC, a newly formed civic tech collaboration, is serving as a leading advocate for the transformation of communities across the nation into thriving, inclusive digital economies.

Many of today’s communities, which were built on a 20th century manufacturing base, now face the challenge of transitioning to a 21st century digital economy. Communities everywhere need strategies and practical programming that support their transition. Led by a diverse team with experience in technology, startup, strategy, business and civic tech, DigitalC partners with technology and civic leaders to provide a playbook for that transition. This will allow those communities to thrive in the digital economy by using the most innovative tools in technology, including predictive analytics, to help solve pressing community problems, such as reducing incidents of chronic disease in low-income neighborhoods.

“We are catalyzing technology for community impact,” said Lev Gonick, DigitalC’s chief executive officer. “Our priorities include bringing together technology leaders to craft regional digital strategies; harnessing the power of data to reshape priorities and solve problems; and designing physical places to connect, inspire and ignite creativity and innovation.”

As technology accelerates the pace of innovation, DigitalC believes local leadership, residents, and businesses must adapt to create smarter, connected, and inclusive communities. DigitalC is developing technology-driven programs and services that will accelerate this process by combining the vast potential of data science with the power of big data analytics to address community priorities and open up new possibilities. DigitalC has identified three focus areas in which it will concentrate its activities:

  • New Civic Agenda – DigitalC is partnering with technology and civic leaders to design 21st century digital strategies. This includes convening private-sector tech CEOs, designers, artists, and scientists to share their innovative work, and engaging civic and tech leaders to broaden their participation and collaboration.
  • Next Generation Apps and Services – DigitalC is accelerating the access, adoption, and use of civic analytics and data-driven solutions to advance the development of smart communities. This effort is creating a framework enabling communities to benefit from powerful, civic-focused, data-driven analytics and applications, to minimize the burden of continuous collection, and to facilitate the sharing of data.
  • Place-Based Activation – DigitalC is working to develop inclusive programs and intentional neighborhoods that spur innovation through technology. These concentrated geographic locations will be dedicated to bringing the technology, entrepreneurial, creative, and civic communities together to drive innovation, opportunity, and learning.

DigitalC will also draw strength from related activities in dozens of other communities through its participation in the national US Ignite effort. US Ignite is a smart community initiative that catalyzes economic development via the new applications and services made possible in gigabit communities.

“Having a robust digital economy will be necessary for any community to remain competitive in the 21st century,” Gonick said. “DigitalC is committed to developing sustainable strategies that are aligned with the needs and priorities of communities for the public good.”

DigitalC has launched a new website, www.digitalc.org, where more information is available about its mission, team, beliefs, and activities.
