Watercrest of Lake Nona to host the UCF “Learning From Caregivers Project”

VERO BEACH, Fla.--()--Watercrest of Lake Nona is proud to announce their partnership with the University of Central Florida (UCF) and One Senior Place in hosting the “Learning From Caregivers Project,” a research project focused on the caregivers of individuals with dementia who developed dangerous behaviors while living at home.

The “Learning from Caregivers Project” sponsored by UCF and led by Dr. Tracy Wharton, PhD, LCSW and Assistant Professor in the UCF College of Health and Public Affairs, School of Social Work, focuses on convening groups of individuals who either are currently or have previously cared for individuals with dementia who had aggressive behaviors. No one will be asked to disclose any identifying information about the person they are caring for. The research will study the early experiences of behavior development, identifying them before crisis, and providing additional services to families who may be overwhelmed by their experience.

Please join UCF and Watercrest of Lake Nona on Tuesday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m. to preview the “Learning from Caregivers Project” and discuss the program, giving caregivers an opportunity to participate in research that will support those caring for someone who has sometimes become aggressive or violent. The meeting will be held at One Senior Place, 715 Douglas Avenue, Altamonte Springs, and is open to anyone connected to those experiencing dementia, specifically memory care communities, support group facilitators, social workers, neurologists, and representatives of area agencies combatting the effects of Alzheimer’s and related dementia.

“Watercrest of Lake Nona is honored to host this preview of UCF’s ‘Learning from Caregivers Project,’ in alignment with our Common Unity program and educational initiatives,” says Christopher S. Shepherd, VP of Creative Program Development for Watercrest Senior Living Group. “UCF believes this study can make a difference in the lives of those experiencing Alzheimer’s related dementias and few interventions have targeted caregivers experiencing aggressive behaviors and enabled the connection of caregivers to research.”
