RDP: Fly a Drone at Cereals

Discover the impact drones could have on your farm’s productivity at this year's Cereals Event – and have a go at flying one at the same time.

TWICKENHAM, England--()--Sponsored by AgHawk, the new Drone Demonstration Zone will be operating both days of the Event and will show visitors how they can be used for crop management in arable businesses.  Any farmer or agronomist can pre-register for a live demonstration to learn more about precision farming and its benefits.

“Drones have the potential to save time and labour, identify crop issues early and enable in-field efficiency through precision farming techniques,” says Event Director, Jon Day. “We’re delighted to be able to not only explain the potential benefits to visitors but also for them to see drones in action and have a go themselves.”

Using an ‘off the peg’ pocket camera on a multirotor drone, visitors will be able to plan a flight and then view the resulting images. While they are accurate to a meter2they provide information down to 2cm, explains Keith Geary, Director of AgHawk.

“With average flights now being able to map 30 -50 acres, drones are a highly efficient and effective way of assessing a crop’s health, especially when compared to crop walking the same acreage.”

The AgHawk software facilitates the pre-programming of flights. The individual images taken are geotagged and ‘stitched’ or mosaicked together in the cloud, accessed via AgHawk’s web portal. NDVI filters can then be applied and the resulting files used for example by farm machinery for variable rate applications.
