AUSTIN, Texas--()--Metropia, the creator of a free app that alleviates traffic congestion, in partnership with the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority announced today its one-year anniversary in the Austin market. Metropia incentivizes its users to make better decisions about their commutes through rewards.

Over the past year, Metropia users have driven over 1 million miles and saved over 3,500 hours that would have otherwise been spent sitting in traffic. In total, Austinites have also reduced CO2 emissions by 340,000 pounds, resulting in almost 3,400 trees planted through Metropia’s work with the American Forests Partnership.

“Metropia is an innovative solution to Austin’s traffic problem, and we’re proud to have supported them over the past year,” said Mike Heiligenstein, executive director of the Mobility Authority. “The Mobility Authority is excited to continue working with the Metropia team to show Austinites and Central Texans how planning ahead can better their commutes and ultimately make a positive change in our region.”

Metropia has been an integral part of the Austin community by building an ecosystem of government, employer and merchant partners that have joined together to become part of the traffic congestion solution. Some examples of Metropia’s involvement include:

  • DUO Social Carpooling launched to encourage friends, families and coworkers to share a ride.
  • Mayor Steve Adler highlighted Metropia as a partner during his Austin Don’t Rush campaign, encouraging Austinites to avoid peak traffic and use alternative modes of transportation.
  • The City of Austin Traffic Management Center and Metropia partnered to monitor traffic conditions during the annual South by Southwest festival.
  • Metropia has integrated with ATXfloods to ensure the safety of Central Texans during severe weather.
  • Metropia has helped donate over 400 meals to Meals on Wheels and More through their involvement with Austin Gives.
  • Central Texans were encouraged to plan ahead for events like Earth Day, Blues on the Green and the Austin Trail of Lights through partnerships with the app.
  • Metropia was also recognized as a GovTech100 company, and was granted the Innovative Transportation Solutions Award by the Heart of Texas Chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar.

“It has been a true pleasure serving the Austin market in such an innovative and impactful way,” said Mia Zmud, vice president of ecosystem partnerships at Metropia. “We are committed to making Austin a better place to drive, and I can’t wait to see what new partnerships we form and the impact we have on the region.”

Metropia is celebrating its one-year anniversary by offering users the opportunity to win 10,000 points. To enter, simply take a trip during Metropia’s weeklong celebration (May 16-22) and earn one entry per trip, or two entries for every DUO Social Carpooling trip taken.

The Metropia team will also be throwing a birthday bash with merchant partner Luke’s Locker at their Lady Bird Lake location on Saturday, May 21 from 8-11 a.m. Join Metropia and KGSR for free breakfast tacos from Tacodeli, prize giveaways, 10 percent off Luke’s Locker merchandise and VIP pass giveaways to KGSR’s Music Lounge.
