HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On May 10-11, HWCG LLC will bring together over two hundred well control experts and regulatory representatives for its annual source control drill in Katy, TX. LLOG Exploration, the largest privately owned producer in the United States, will host the exercise.
During this large-scale drill, LLOG will act as the “Responsible Party” in a simulated well blowout scenario. HWCG’s Mutual Aid team, which includes experts from all sixteen member companies as well as dozens of vendors and response partners, will assist LLOG in gaining well control during the exercise. This massive Mutual Aid repository becomes available to all HWCG members in the event of a real source control incident.
Despite declining rig counts and spending cuts elsewhere in the industry, HWCG and its members continue to integrate dynamic response capabilities to quickly and comprehensively respond to a blowout.
“The annual drill is just one way that HWCG actively maintains its ‘Ready to Respond’ commitment to protect people, property and the environment,” explains David Coatney, Managing Director of HWCG. “While the annual drill represents the largest single event each year, our consortium facilitates planning meetings and technical discussions year-round.”
As changes to well control regulation unfold, HWCG leads its membership in advocating for safe and responsible drilling practices. The consortium’s Deepwater Intervention Technical Committee, comprised of over thirty industry experts, is charged with prioritizing technological upgrades to the response system and will continue to play a key role in advising HWCG’s members.
To demonstrate its authentic commitment to safety, HWCG has invited regulatory agencies, including the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and United States Coast Guard, to participate in the exercise. The drill provides one of the most effective, large-scale training opportunities for both the industry and its regulators.
