Technavio Releases New Report on the Global Large Format Printer Market

LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest report covers the present scenario and growth prospects for the global large format printer market 2016-2020.

In this report, Technavio’s hardware and semiconductor research experts announce their key market highlights for the global large format printer market. Their findings include:

Ultraviolet (UV)-cured ink and latex ink-based printers to present significant opportunities in the large format printer (LFP) market

The growth of the global LFP market is driven by an increasing demand from the advertising and textile industry for posters and banners for special events and unique designs. Vehicle graphics and wraps and home furnishing and designing are some other emerging application areas of LFP. Solvent and aqueous inks are the most commonly used ink types. However, UV-cured and latex inks are becoming popular.

One of Technavio’s lead analysts Sunil Kumar Singh, who specializes in computing devices research added, “In 2015, solvent ink-based LFPs accounted for a market share of 30.9%. However, the segment's market share is expected to decline due to growing consumer preference for UV-cured ink and latex ink, and this trend is anticipated to gather significant pace during the forecast period.

UV-cured inks dry as soon as they are cured. They can be applied on a wide range of substrates and produce a robust image. However, UV-cured inks are expensive when compared to other types of inks. In addition, a flexible substrate can crack when UV-cured ink is applied. It is therefore being used in flatbed printers for printing on rigid substrates such as wood, aluminum, and plastic.

Reduction in the use of ink is anticipated in large format printers

Technavio researchers anticipate, reduction in the use of ink in wide format printing will improve performance of large format printers over the next four years. This can be achieved by monitoring the ink vehicle and providing appropriate amount of ink for different applications. Inkgard by IProlong is one such software that helps in reducing ink usage by adjusting the level of ink saving, depending on the type of job. In a high color print, the user can set the saving to up to 20% and the printer will accordingly disperse fewer color drops or points per area, thus greatly reducing overlapping of color. On an average, an LFP ink cartridge can print up to 500 pages. However, by effective monitoring and controlling of ink level can make the cartridge last longer.

Growing market for 3D printing to boost sales of large format printers

Traditional printing has many limitations in terms of capacity, shapes, and structures, and it offers limited colors. It is also a time-consuming and complex process which involves high manufacturing costs. These limitations are giving the 3D print market an upper edge. 3D printing offers benefits such as high quality output, energy-efficiency, less waste, and capacity to produce large number of shapes and structures. It could provide companies with relevant and inexpensive giveaways such as prizes or scaled down replicas of products that are too large to bring to a trade show.

Italy-based reprographics firm, Digicopy, offers 3D printing and scanning services that are used by a variety of customers from fashion design firms to students of fashion designing. Initially, 3D printing was an expensive service but the cost has come down thanks to the growth of 3D printing. It is anticipated to positively impact the sales of large format printers during the forecast period.
