Netronome and Ericsson Demonstrate up to 5X Lower Total Cost of Ownership for SDN and NFV Applications

Ericsson Cloud SDN Platform Accelerated by the Agilio™ Server-Based Networking Solution from Netronome Delivers up to 5X Higher Virtual Machine Density and Performance per Server Rack

BARCELONA, Spain--()--MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS – Netronome, a leading provider of high-performance intelligent networking solutions, and Ericsson, a world leader in communications technology and services, today announced a joint demonstration of the Ericsson Cloud SDN Platform accelerated by the Netronome Agilio server-based networking solution. The demonstration, featured this week in Ericsson’s exhibit booth (Hall 2, Stand 2N60) at Mobile World Congress, will showcase significant reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO) for Cloud SDN and NFV applications by utilizing hardware-based acceleration of virtual switch processing.

The efficiency of modern data center infrastructures is driven by virtual machine (VM) capacity and network performance achieved by traditional IT and modern NFV workloads running in the VMs. Critical server-based networking functions, such as virtualization, security, load balancing and telemetry are required to run workloads in the VMs. When such server-based networking functions are implemented using software and server CPU cores, such as with a virtual switch, not only are the workloads in the VMs starved for needed network bandwidth, but they also become limited in density per server. The result is that more servers are needed for the workloads and required outputs, bloating CAPEX and OPEX significantly, and driving up overall TCO. The joint Netronome and Ericsson demonstration showcases how this problem can be solved using innovative server-based hardware and software solutions that can be easily deployed by service providers and enterprises. “Ericsson’s Cloud SDN Platform based on OpenDaylight, leverages open source technologies such as Open vSwitch and OpenStack to provide a flexible and scalable networking framework for deploying IT and NFV services,” said Elena Romero, Head of Product Line SDN & Policy Control at Ericsson. “Integration of the Netronome Agilio intelligent server adapter and software solution into the Ericsson Cloud SDN solution results in up to five times more output per server rack, helping lower overall dollar per compute resource in the data center infrastructure.”

“The Netronome Agilio high-performance, server-based networking products are a perfect fit to Ericsson’s IT and NFV-optimized software-defined infrastructure and SDN software platforms,” said Sujal Das, general manager and senior vice president of marketing at Netronome. “Our collaboration with Ericsson’s industry-leading engineering teams has led to a ground-breaking demonstration of an optimized Cloud SDN and NFV solution that takes data center server efficiency and performance to new heights.”

The Netronome Agilio platform enables businesses of all sizes to dramatically increase the efficiency of their data center compute infrastructure, delivering up to 5X higher throughput while reducing CPU requirements by up to 80 percent compared to traditional NICs. Restoring valuable compute resources reduces customer TCO by delivering unmatched price/performance for compute and service node applications to service provider and enterprise cloud networks, while preserving standard cloud configuration and automation tools.
