DeVry Education Group’s Institute for Research and Clinical Strategy Earns “Best in Show” Honors in Simulation Showcase

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill.--()--The Institute for Research and Clinical Strategy (IRCS) was awarded Best in Show honors at the 2016 International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare, held in San Diego, California, Jan. 16-20. The team shared its award with Canon U.S.A. and Learning Games Network for their joint demonstration of the MREAL a mixed-reality imaging system designed to support anatomy and physiology education.

More than 2,500 educators, clinicians, researchers, and other professionals attended the meeting, sponsored by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare to highlight the latest innovations and best practices in healthcare simulation. The IRCS, which is part of DeVry Education Group, focuses on researching and developing simulation and gaming technology to support advances in medical, veterinary, nursing, and allied health education in cooperation with DeVry Group’s family of healthcare education institutions.

“The International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare is a premier event showcasing simulation technology and gaming applications, and sharing ideas for using these modalities to improve healthcare education and patient safety,” said Bruce Kaplan, executive director of the IRCS. “We were pleased to have the opportunity to meet with organizations and individuals at the forefront of cutting-edge simulation technology, and to bring new ideas back to the educational institutions we work with.”

Canon’s MREAL mixed-reality imaging system delivers 3-D images that provide spatial perspectives for anatomy education not available through traditional dissection or conventional modeling; its high-quality images successfully replicate actual tissue and anatomical structures.

IRCS sponsored the meeting’s Serious Games and Virtual Environments Showcase and Arcade, a special session on virtual and game-based technology. This session allowed users of virtual and game-based technology to collaborate and network with students, clinicians, educators and technology companies. Members of IRCS also presented a workshop on game-based learning, which is becoming ubiquitous within healthcare education and clinical training programs, and a project titled the AnatomyTable, which uses an interactive, large-format, 3-D touch screen to reinforce anatomy and physiology objectives for clinical sciences students.
