ALEXANDRIA, Va.--()--Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA) and 5Star Life Insurance Company (5Star Life) announce the January 1, 2016 retirement of Jeffrey Sandefur, Senior Vice President of Marketing.

Sandefur joined AFBA in 1989 as Vice President of Marketing and was named Senior Vice President in November 2000.

Sandefur’s contributions to AFBA include the development of an impressive array of member benefits to accompany the Association’s suite of life insurance products. He also directed the development of the AFBA website and integration of social media.

After receiving a Bachelor’s degree from Hiram College and a Master’s degree from Wichita State, Sandefur joined the Air Force as a Commissioned Officer. During his 20-year military career, he served for 10 years in England as a pilot. He spent an additional 10 years at the Pentagon and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

“It was our good fortune when Jeff decided to join AFBA rather than become a commercial pilot,” said General Ed Eberhart, USAF (Ret.), President of AFBA. “Jeff has played an integral part in the development and growth of AFBA. We are grateful for his dedication and outstanding service.”

Sandefur’s duties will be assumed by Cynthia Light, currently Senior Vice President, Business Development for 5Star Life.

About AFBA – Founded to Serve Our Great Nation

Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA) was established in 1947 with the support of the General of the Army, Dwight D. Eisenhower to ease the strain on military members and their families. At that time, military members could not purchase life insurance that would pay a death benefit if the member was killed in combat. AFBA continues to honor the mission set forth by its founders—to promote the welfare of its members and their families by providing high quality, low cost life insurance products and other financial benefits and services in peace and in war.

From its first offices in the basement of the Pentagon and for almost 70 years, AFBA has stood by our country’s armed forces. Today, AFBA is a market leader in offering low cost life insurance to those who serve this great nation to include members of the uniformed services, first responders, government employees and their families. AFBA currently has over 435,000 members with over $42 billion of life insurance in force and in excess of $1.7 billion of claims paid since inception. These life insurance programs are underwritten by 5Star Life Insurance Company, a related enterprise of AFBA.
