PHILADELPHIA--()--Cigna-HealthSpring, a Cigna (NYSE:CI) company serving Medicare and Medicaid customers, and Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health (“Jefferson”), one of the nation’s top hospital systems are expanding their partnership. The expanded agreement will result in greater access to top doctors and coordination of care, better affordability, and more personalized service for residents in the tri-state area. It also includes Abington Memorial Hospital and Lansdale Hospital along with their physicians for the first time.

For customers who chose a Cigna-HealthSpring Medicare Advantage plan during fall open enrollment for 2016 plans, Jefferson hospitals will be covered at the in-network benefit level when their plan takes effect on January 1, 2016. “Cigna-HealthSpring collaborates with primary care physicians and puts the patient-physician relationship at the center of everything we do. Through our Partnership for Quality program we provide valuable resources to health professionals like extra in-office nurses, pharmacists to help with medication reconciliation and medication management, and disease registry technology to improve the health specific to the needs of the Medicare population,” said Dr. Laura Reich, Cigna-HealthSpring market manager for Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region. “Our expanded partnership reflects our shared commitment to our customers, and creates a greater opportunity to provide the services and care they need to achieve their personal health goals with high quality healthcare professionals and specialists they trust.”

Cigna-HealthSpring’s Partnership for Quality (P4Q) program has helped closed gaps in care like missed health screenings and prescriptions, reduced unnecessary and costly use of emergent care, and has improved follow-up care for customers transitioning from the hospital to their homes. In addition, Jefferson will participate in Cigna-HealthSpring’s Physician Organized Delivery System (PODS), an accountable care model that facilitates better sharing of customer clinical data to coordinate and improve care.

“By expanding our partnership, together we are able to increase healthcare access for residents in the tri-state area, close gaps in care and proactively address health issues before they become more serious and more costly,” said Dr. Anne Docimo, Jefferson’s Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer. “Our shared goals put the patient at the center and empower our physicians to improve health outcomes and provide a personalized customer experience.”
