SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Align Commerce, a next-generation global payments provider serving the small- and medium-sized business community, announced today the appointment of industry veteran Jay Hansen as compliance officer and general counsel. Hansen will oversee legal, regulatory affairs and compliance functions.
“I am thrilled to join Align Commerce to help give control back to the small businesses whose livelihoods depend on efficiently sending and receiving international payments,” Hansen said. “Align’s management team boasts decades of combined experience in the fintech world and a steadfast commitment to establishing a strong compliance foundation as we transform the cross-border payments industry through delivering rapid, secure and cost-effective solutions.”
Hansen joins Align Commerce (Align) after 13 years at Intuit Inc., where he served as assistant general counsel and compliance officer for the payments and commerce solutions division, which processes more than $30 billion in annual payments for small business. He was responsible for overseeing 50 state-money transmitter-licensing and anti-money-laundering programs, and also managed a compliance team focused on domestic and international payments processing and domestic small-business lending referral businesses. Earlier in his career, Hansen was an attorney at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he provided legal support to startups and growth companies.
Align is engaged in actively disrupting the outdated international payments industry by leveling the playing field for small businesses in international payments with its proprietary technology, which utilizes the blockchain to send and receive money across borders and currencies. The company recently closed a $12.5 million Series A round of funding led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), and announced that KPCB general partner Randy Komisar had joined Align’s board of directors.
“As we continue to grow at a rapid pace, Align Commerce will benefit extensively from Jay’s expertise in financial crime prevention, governance risk and compliance and anti-money laundering,” Forzley said. “With his significant experience providing legal counsel to the payments industry, Jay has the knowledge and experience to help lead Align Commerce to success, providing guidance to departments across the organization and external enterprises as we expand internationally.”
Hansen comes to Align Commerce at a critical point in the global payments industry. Small businesses are currently under-served by banks and have the least leverage in overseas payments. At the same time, large banks have shifted their focus to cater to enterprise-sized companies where they can expand their revenue streams.
